Michael discusses what is one of the most misunderstood, or most “forgotten,” or most “ignored” teachings in Scripture.  And the end result is too many Christians missing what is really going on in their lives…leaving them without the knowledge to begin to deal with problems they face each and every day.

DAY 98

Flesh Is Flesh

That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. --John 3:6

You have flesh! The flesh, simply defined, is the body, mind, will, and emotions of man under the control of something other than Jesus. Believers and unbelievers alike have flesh. Walking in the flesh is the opposite of abiding in Christ. Have you seriously considered that your flesh will never improve? It is an important point. How can we expect the flesh to be anything other than flesh? Flesh is flesh and can do nothing that is of the Spirit. We have seen bad flesh and are often on a continual quest to find good flesh in ourselves, our mates, our church family, and our children.

Once I was visiting with a couple about the husband’s affair. The wife, legitimately, was quite hurt. But the longer she talked, the more something illegitimate came to the forefront: flesh! This woman wanted her husband to guarantee that his flesh would never again do such a thing. How can he do that? He cannot, for that type of bad flesh does that kind of thing. The flesh's determining to do better will change nothing, for flesh does not control flesh. It is futile to find out what the flesh can do but worthwhile to discover and admit what it cannot do. Good flesh cannot lead a godly life. I wanted the husband to recognize that he is weak and that repeating the same mistake was completely possible. Then I wanted him to move into Christ and discover that His power is manifested in the man’s weakness. Flesh is completely subjugated when a believer is abiding. On the other hand, the wife wanted his flesh to determine to live spiritually. She did not understand what I was saying, which was understandable. She thought I was giving him an excuse. I was not. I just wanted to get to the spider and stop sweeping cobwebs. She had found something good in her own flesh--that she had never had an affair--and was clinging tenaciously to the hope that good flesh could help her husband. “Because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God” (Romans 8:7). Why do we always attempt to find good in our flesh? The best of flesh is the worst of it, for it keeps us from humbly seeking Christ. She got the point and released her husband to abide in Christ rather than promising to make bad flesh act nicely.

Finding something good in the flesh is so vexing, consuming, and defeating. Why do we defend ourselves? Because we are holding on to the belief that there is something good in our flesh! Why can others control us by leaving us out? Because there is something good in our flesh that deserves better treatment! Why do we react and not respond to those around us? There is something good in our flesh that must be respected! Agree with God and admit that there is nothing good in your flesh, and then agree with others. When told you are proud, say, “Yes, and you have not see the worst of my flesh!” When told that you are stupid, worthless, inferior, and angry, simply agree! Agree that in your flesh dwells no good thing.

Everything has a definition, because words have meaning.  And it is very important to have lots of words in our vocabulary…and to have the CORRECT meanings.  Otherwise we cannot have the correct understanding.  This word “flesh” is one of the most important for Christians to know and understand to get the truths of the N.T. that speak to walking (living) in the “flesh” or in the “Spirit.”  Because God makes it perfectly clear that every moment we are either walking in the “flesh” or walking in the “Spirit.”  We need to get the CONTEXT of the use of the word correct to understand the use and meaning (truth) to be applied.

“sarx” – Greek word translated “flesh” almost 150 times in the N.T.  It means either the “soft substance of the living body of man” or “the body, mind, will, and emotions of man under the control of something other than Jesus.”  If the Scripture is speaking to the latter, but one is using the definition of the former, the understanding is distorted, disguised, or downright incorrect…therefore misunderstood or not understood at all.  This all seems so elementary, but with so many living without any seeming comprehension of that which is contrary to being under the control of Jesus the church finds itself facing all sorts of dilemmas that shouldn’t exist at all.

Almost every sentence in this days’ writing of Michael’s is a lesson unto itself.  And there is no need to list them again…use the highlighted sentences, perhaps, as a focal point of what you need to learn and apply to your life first and foremost.  But, whatever, let me encourage you to “get” all these truths so you can begin to self-examine, self-discipline, and seek the Lord for a change from “feeding” that which is contrary to Jesus’ control.

By the way, how many Christians do you know who live trying to get flesh to control flesh???

Day 97 - Finding The Way

Michael makes note of one of the most tragic things so many people are facing today, including Christians...trying to “find their way” in life/to live, without turning to Christ.  And then Michael gives two profound truths that could change the lives of millions.

DAY 97

Finding The Way

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life." --John 14:6

It is urgent today that mankind find a way to live. So far what usually is discovered is how not to live. Many continue to seek for the method, the understanding, or the system that will guide them. In Africa a traveler finds many places where there are no trails through the jungle, so he must hire a guide. The local name of the guide when translated into English is The Way. The way is a person! In the jungle and chaos of life, the Way is not knowledge but a Person.

It is told in India of a young girl trying to put together a jigsaw puzzle of the world, but she could not. Upon turning the pieces over she discovered a different puzzle much easier to put together: a picture of Jesus. Once Jesus was the focus, even the pieces of the world came together. He is the Way that is needed to make our world simple. Pray with me that God would allow us to proclaim the Way with all of the force, power, and conviction that it possesses.

In Michael’s scriptural text Jesus Christ identifies Himself as “the way.”  His followers were following the person of Christ, not a set of rules or methods.  Man always wants a “law, rule, or method.”  Michael used to talk about how that if he just preached Jesus, few would hang around.  That is why in this day’s writing Michael points out so clearly “many continue to seek for the method, the understanding, or the system that will guide them.”  All of these “other ways” involve knowledge.  Which leads to Michael’s first profound truth in this day’s writing: (1) “…the Way is not knowledge but a Person.”  Amen.  Would to God that all Christians could receive this.  The second profound truth: (2) “He is the Way that is needed to make our world simple.”

Simple.  What a wonderful state.  Simply by their own decisions, millions make their life more complex…and less simple…because they choose a law, rule, or method instead of The Person.  Well, amen.

By the way, one of my favorite quotes of Michael’s sayings was this: “Jesus is The Way, and all other ways are not the way.”

Day 96 - Feeling Unstable?

James 1:8 is really an informative verse…really shows the heart of the battle for Christians.  Michael gives us one of the most important lessons we can ever learn!

DAY 96

Feeling Unstable?

. . . a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. --James 1:8

It is said that if you want the fruit, dig without damaging the root; if you do not want the fruit, lay an ax to the root. In short, deal with the real issue. If a believer lacks peace, he should go to the root. Jesus has given the promise that we will have perfect peace if our minds are on Him. That means there can be only one reason for the lack of peace. Truth is not only preached, it is demonstrated. That is the preface.

So many today are unstable at home, work, and within. Road rage does not happen on the road; today people are so mad when they get in their cars that all it takes is a little inconvenience to reveal the buried anger. Dad is explosive, Mom is short-tempered, the kids are impulsive and rebellious, and all are unstable. Could it be that people are unstable not because of a poor childhood, abuse, prejudice, pain, hurt, or anxiety? Could it be that people are unstable because they are double-minded? “Let God be found true, though every man [be found] a liar” (Romans 3:4). Double-minded is to want for one’s self and, at the same time, to want for another. A father wants the new woman, the new car, and every minute of time for himself; yet he wants to be a loving, giving, caring father. If he gives in to the father and husband side of himself, the enemy is whispering how much he will lose. If he gives in to self, the enemy makes sure he cannot stand the image of being a bad father. What to do with this kind of double-mindedness? He does not know what to do, so he gets angry.

If you are unstable, ask God to show you where you are double-minded. What are you doing that you should not be? What should you be doing that you are not? Where is the battle between self and the cross?

There is so much to grasp in Michael’s writing this day…
                 1. Deal with the REAL issue.
               2. Jesus has given us the PROMISE, and the PREMISE, of a peaceful life here on earth.
                3. All the issues “man” constantly tries to solve are the WRONG issues.
           4.  Double-mindedness is primarily a “self-focus” issue.
            5. The REAL issue is WHICH MIND are we going to live in.

WHICH MIND?  Yes, WHICH mind…the Bible makes it clear that Christians have two minds: the earthly mind we were born with in a “lost” state, AND…the Mind of Christ that we were given when we were Born Again.  Therefore, technically, ONLY Christians can be truly “double-minded” (two minds).  And we are that way ALL the time!  The issue is: WHICH mind are we going to live in?!?

And God tells us in 2 Corin 10 we have weapons to bring EVERY thought captive to the obedience of Christ.  So, what’s our problem?  CHOICE.
a.    Which mind?
b.    Whose power?

Choose correctly and enjoy that “perfect peace” in Isaiah 26:3.  Amen.

Day 190 - Living To Man

Thoughts on Michael Wells’ teachings in My Weakness for His Strength - # 96

We live in a day and time where it seems far too many Christians are “living to man” instead of “living to God.”  This is confirmed by checking out all their life decisions.  Therefore, the multitudes are in bondage, no different from those who don’t know Christ.  Michael takes us through some of the ways in which this is expressed, and also gives us God’s way and the path to freedom.

DAY 190

Living to Man

The fear of man brings a snare, But he who trusts in the LORD will be exalted.  Many seek the ruler’s favor, But justice for man comes from the LORD.     Proverbs 29:25, 26

Living to and for men is one of the worst kinds of bondage, for anyone living to man cannot live to God, the Giver of freedom. We have a saying, “I love you, but I do not live to you. I live to God.” I will again preach of my own weakness: I determined some time ago that I would no longer meet with politicians. Why? I always compromise! I have met wicked men in places of authority and found myself compromising. The men should have been rebuked. If Jesus did not go to the “leaders” in His day, then what business do I have going? There is just something about being in the presence of image that shakes me. It is my weakness; I am sure some can withstand it, but I cannot; I end up living to man. There are several ways to live for man: giving glory, taking glory, giving judgment, receiving judgment, showing partiality because of worldly resources, groveling at the image or position of “greatness,” discussing man’s “secret” failings, refusing to ask a question, avoiding a confrontation, or reacting to criticism. I have done it all, and I tell you it is a miserable way to live. What makes it so miserable is the awareness that there is another way to live, free from man-pleasing; however, this freedom comes through faith. We must believe completely and unreservedly that we have a God who provides for us in every way, financially, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. We must believe that He opens doors, provides the way, and gives us wisdom. We must believe that He gives us everything needed, and that in Him we will find everything that we have looked for elsewhere in vain. For it is only in seeing that God meets all of our needs that frees us from the root of living for men, that root being the belief that man can provide something that we need. If assurance, significance, value, and worth come from God, what does man have to offer? If man has nothing to provide that we need--no praise, position, or possession--then we are free not to live to man. Again, living for the approval of man has at its root the belief that man can give us something that God will not. Therefore, we compromise our own eternal goal to get something perishable, even though what man offers always seems to come at a high price. When we live to men, we must ask ourselves what their favor will give us: our name on a piece of paper, a conversational piece of name-dropping that will elevate us when in a social setting, a job interview, or their approval over our work? Once we move in faith toward the Provider of all, we will be free, free indeed. It is great to trust God and not trust man, it is beautiful to acknowledge that God provides, and it is wonderful to let the heart become a graveyard for criticism because of the understanding that people’s praise would not fill the void that only Christ can fill. Now, some will say, “Then we can be hermits; we do not need men!” Not at all! We need them in order to love them.

Isn’t it interesting the scripture Michael uses for this day’s writing starts with the declaration: “the fear of man brings a snare”?   A snare has something or someone in bondage.  How is it that with all the scriptures that speak of the awesome power of God compared to the weakness of man…so many Christians are “snared” by “the fear of man”?  Unbelievable, isn’t it!

“Exaltation” and “justice,” certainly two things most would readily admit to desiring, are “from the LORD.”  Why look elsewhere, especially to man?

I love Michael’s three statements of what “we must believe.”  Then…we can “move in faith”!  And be free, free indeed!

All the rest is garbage.

Day 279 - The Life of Grace Is a Stricter Life, a Higher Life

Thoughts on Michael Wells’ teachings in My Weakness for His Strength - # 95

I recently had someone tell me they couldn’t read or follow anything Michael Wells had to say, simply because he had “no standard.”  I replied in astonishment: “But Michael’s standard is the greatest ‘standard’ there is…JESUS!”  In that same conversation, the person told me that they and their spouse were two of the most legalistic parents that ever existed.  And to look at that person’s family and see the tragedies throughout (the result of legalistic parenting) are heart-breaking.  Michael shares the difference between grace and legalism in Day 279’s writing…

DAY 279

The Life Of Grace Is a Stricter Life, a Higher Life

Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord or of me His prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel according to the power of God, who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity. --II Timothy 1:8-10

It is not possible to minister to those who cannot hear, such as legalists who know nothing of grace. For example, a legalist can be in the middle of the overt sin of an affair and still preach the next Sunday on purity. Why? How? It is simple! Legalism feeds the flesh. Sin and legalism are one and the same. There is no pressure of contrast between legalism and sin in a person's being. Unrighteousness and self-righteousness both satisfy the flesh.

However, a grace man cannot go on sinning, for the grace of God will rip him in two. When preaching grace, God will always come for that man's words in order to make him really understand grace and realize he does not have an excuse. Factor in the work of the cross! He has been crucified and is dead to sin. How, then, can he continue to sin? If he does, with this understanding, he will come apart. The standard is so much higher in grace. It is the legalist who can actually practice sin without conviction. Embrace the message of grace, practice sin, and be ripped in two!

The Apostle Paul points out that there is a power of God in every Believer that “calls us” to a “holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity.”
·         His own purpose (His heart, His will for every Believer)
·         His own grace (His working this out in us)
·         Granted us IN CHRIST JESUS (part of who we are and what we have “in Christ”)

Michael so pointedly shows us the diametric difference between grace and legalism.  And then points out that sin and legalism are one and the same!  In other writings Michael has noted that legalism is simply the two sides of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil that God has told us to eat not thereof.  And Michael has pointed out that “this cursed tree and its teachings, reasoning, and thinking is thrust upon the believer from almost every quarter from the time that he first accepts Christ” (Day 276).

So, the question confronts us: Why has the teachings, reasoning, and thinking of the “cursed tree” been thrust upon Believers for years and years and years?  Why have Believers been made to “eat” of the very tree that God said, “Don’t eat.”?  Why has the church continued to do this?  And then, once we have been shown God’s truth, would we ever continue to eat thereof?

And yet, will we recognize that the life of grace is a life that is stricter and higher than the legalistic life?  But…(this is an HOLY “but”)…it is His grace that can and will live this life through us!  Embrace grace, and find sin being removed from your life here.  Well, amen!
